Football is the most widely followed sport in Greece. The Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) is the highest professional football body in Greece. Founded in 1927, it controls all aspects of Greek football and teams and organises the Super League as the country’s top league competition.

Olympiacos is the country’s most representative team having won 39 league championships, while its eternal rival is Panathinaikos with 20 championships. The latter is the only Greek team to have reached a European final, as Panathinaikos lost the 1971 European Cup final to Dutch side Ajax.

The Greek national team won the European Nations Championship in 2004 by beating hosts Portugal in the final (1-0).
