Belgian Teams

Football is the most popular sport in Belgium. The Belgian Football Federation (KBVB) controls all aspects of Belgian competition and teams. The top competition in Belgium is the Jupiler Pro League, which is organised by the federation itself, as well as the Belgian Cup. The KBVB also manages the men’s and women’s national teams. There are a total of 18,190 Belgian teams and 650,000 federation cards.

Belgian football has traditionally been dominated by Anderlecht and Club Brugge, although other teams are now emerging to compete for the league title with the big teams. This is the case of Union Saint Gilloise, Antwerp and Genk, who occasionally appear in European competitions, although their participation is usually merely testimonial.

The Belgium national team, usually nicknamed the Red Devils, has participated in thirteen World Cups and six European Championships, their best results being a third place (2018) and a fourth place (1986). Their best European Championship performance was reaching the final in 1980 where they were defeated by Germany (1-2).
